The causes that cause split ends

There are several causes of split ends, but the good news is that they can be prevented and treated to maintain healthy, beautiful hair. Here’s how.

Split ends are a very common hair problem. It doesn’t matter your age or hair type. If you don’t take proper care of your hair, they’ll eventually appear sooner or later.

That’s why it’s so important to know the causes of hair loss. This way, you can prevent it and have strong, healthy hair .

These are the most common causes of split ends.

Abusing heat tools

Heat is one of hair’s greatest enemies. Therefore, it’s not recommended to overuse heat tools such as hairdryers, flat irons, or curling irons, as they weaken the cuticle and cause split ends.

If you use them frequently, remember to apply a heat protectant beforehand to protect your hair from high temperatures.

Not caring for your hair properly

Not using specific hair products or not brushing your hair frequently are factors that increase the chances of having split ends.

Use conditioner after every wash. This makes detangling easier and prevents hair breakage. If you have oily hair, avoid the roots.

And apply a hydrating mask from the mid-lengths to the ends once or twice a week. If your hair feels very dry and damaged, leave it on overnight and wash it as usual in the morning.

External aggressions

The sun, wind, cold, chlorine, and sea salt also damage and weaken hair, causing split ends.

Just as you protect your skin from the sun, you should also do the same with your hair. There are hair products that, in addition to moisturizing, also protect against solar radiation. You can also wear hats and scarves in the summer to prevent sun damage.

Finally, it provides extra hydration to your hair in both winter and summer. Cold and heat dry out hair fibers.

Use of chemical products and ingredients

Frequent use of harsh chemicals, such as hair dyes, bleach, and perms, weakens the hair structure and causes split ends to form.

Use organic products made with natural ingredients that do not contain parabens, sulfates, mineral oils, or silicones.

Also avoid permanent dyes that contain ammonia. Opt for other techniques such as mud dyeing or ammonia-free hair colors like Garnier’s Olia .

Lifestyle and diet

Poor diet, stress, lack of sleep, and, ultimately, unhealthy lifestyle habits can affect hair health and contribute to the formation of split ends.

Learn to combat stress with exercises like yoga or Pilates, drink enough water daily, and eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals like biotin and vitamin E.
